About Us...
SmartNewtown
was started in October 2002 to provide free internet and computer
training to people who may not have access to computers or the
internet.
Back then we were a joint pilot project between Wellington City
Council, the Wellington Region Economic Development Agency and the
Wellington Region 2020 Communications Trust.
Today SmartNewtown is a project of the Newtown Community and Cultural Centre and is solely funded by Wellington City Council.
Our friendly staff are all IT professionals with a wide range of
computing backgrounds and experience. In addition to providing
access to computers and the Internet we provide an in-house help-desk
service and two introductory training courses designed to provide
customers with the fundamentals of computing, the Internet and a basic
understanding of the Microsoft Office suite of products.
In February 2010 we expanded our facilities, remodelling the office
space layout, modernising our computers and the software versions
running on them, increasing our Internet bandwidth and performance and
upgrading from 10 computers to 19.
